Leopard’s Island

09 Days
08 Nights
Negombo. Wilpattu, Yala, Kandy
Enter the gateway of the sanctuary and feel the excitement build as rugged nature unfurls before you with every jerk of the dusty 4 wheel drive. Observations have revealed that Sri Lankan leopards may be more social than subspecies elsewhere and are known to tackle bigger prey than themselves, including all most full-grown buffaloes. Our leopards help to determine the densities and numbers of prey species such as spotted/axis deer, barking deer, wild boar and sambar. This is a unique and distinctive position to be in as the larger lions and tigers usually supersede leopards, in other areas of the world, but in Sri Lanka., leopards are at top of the food chain. Your best chance to see a leopard is generally first thing in the morning and then again at dusk. The male leopards in Yala tend to be confident animals and are often seen walking the tracks during the day. Young males in particular seem to have no fear of jeeps, which can lead to some excellent photographic opportunities. Whether you are a wildlife photography enthusiast, or whether observing animals in their natural habitat has made it on to your bucket list, you don’t want to miss the opportunity to marvel at the sight of one of nature’s most breathtaking animals. Many travelers associate Sri Lanka with pristine beaches and the resplendent Asian elephants, but the jewel of our crown is fast becoming the treasured leopard as locals become more dedicated to preserving this glorious animal.
